Gnaeus Valens, a soldier of the Praetorian Guard, testifies about guarding Paul during his first Roman imprisonment. Because Paul lived in rented lodgings and received visitors openly, Valens witnessed a constant stream of Jews, Greeks, slaves, freedmen, merchants and messengers from distant churches. Money arrived to support Paul, and letters traveled back to communities throughout the provinces. Varro presents the arrangement as evidence of a remarkable network operating from Rome under the eyes of Caesar’s own soldiers. Valens does not dispute the network, but emphasizes that nothing was concealed. Paul even learned the guards’ names and remembered the details of their lives.

The testimony becomes much more dangerous when Varro asks whether Valens himself came to believe Paul’s message. Paul tries to protect the soldier by asking that he not be required to answer, but Valens chooses to answer anyway: yes. He remembers watching Paul face the possibility of either release or execution while dictating a letter telling the Philippians to rejoice. What persuaded Valens was not a single argument but the consistency of the man he observed at close range. Paul admits that he experienced fear, but Valens saw that fear did not determine how Paul treated people or whether he remained faithful.

Varro then exposes the political significance of Valens’s conversion. If a man believes that “to die is gain,” what punishment can the state use to compel him to abandon his convictions? Asked what he would do if ordered to execute Paul, Valens admits that he would refuse, surrender his sword and accept the consequences rather than use violence against his officers. Varro has therefore uncovered precisely the tension he has been warning about: Christianity can produce people who respect authority and serve faithfully while recognizing a point beyond which earthly authority cannot command their conscience. Fear may still hurt them, imprison them or kill them, but it can no longer guarantee their obedience.
