Eleazar bar Yonah, an elder of Rome’s Jewish community, describes Paul’s arrival in the capital and his almost immediate request to meet with Jewish leaders. Eleazar approaches him cautiously because Rome’s Jews remember what happened under Claudius, when disputes within their community led to their expulsion from the city. Paul tells the elders that he has done nothing against the Jewish people or their ancestral customs and that his appeal to Caesar is not an attempt to accuse his own nation. The leaders have received no reports condemning him, but they have heard that the movement associated with Jesus is spoken against everywhere.

When the elders return in greater numbers, Paul spends the day arguing from Moses and the Prophets that Jesus is Israel’s Messiah. Some are persuaded and others remain unconvinced. Eleazar is among those who reject Paul’s interpretation, while his own son eventually accepts it. Their household therefore becomes one small example of the division Varro has traced throughout the trial. Yet Eleazar refuses to describe his son as an enemy or Paul as a criminal. He and Paul may believe each other profoundly mistaken about the Messiah, but disagreement over Scripture does not automatically become rebellion against Rome.

Varro presses Eleazar precisely because he should have every reason to fear the disruption Paul’s teaching can cause. Instead, Eleazar remembers what happened when Claudius punished an entire Jewish community without understanding its internal disputes. He refuses to help Rome repeat that mistake. He will argue with Paul, reject Paul’s interpretation and continue arguing with his own son, but he will not say that a Jew deserves death for reading their shared Scriptures differently. The episode ends with Paul and Eleazar still divided on the central theological question, yet still able to recognize one another as belonging to the same people.
