In Episode 26, Gaius Cassianus Varro delivered his closing argument against Paul of Tarsus, bringing the prosecution’s case to its conclusion. He acknowledged that Paul had neither raised an army nor organized a violent rebellion, and that many of his followers were peaceful, law-abiding people. Nevertheless, Varro argued that the absence of armed resistance did not mean Paul’s movement posed no danger to Rome. Its growing communities crossed boundaries of nationality, class, and social standing, creating bonds of loyalty that extended beyond the traditional structures of Roman society.
Varro focused particularly on the implications of a movement whose members recognized an authority greater than Caesar’s. The testimony of Gnaeus Valens, a Praetorian soldier who declared that he would refuse an order he considered unjust, demonstrated that this conviction could influence even those responsible for protecting the emperor. Varro warned that such beliefs might eventually undermine the obedience upon which imperial authority depended. He also questioned how Rome could govern people who believed that death was not the final punishment and who might therefore be willing to suffer rather than surrender their convictions.
Concluding his argument, Varro reminded the court that Paul had appealed to Caesar while teaching that Caesar’s authority was not absolute. The central question, he maintained, was whether Rome could permit a movement to continue spreading when its members acknowledged obligations that could supersede imperial commands. Although Varro had not demonstrated that Paul had committed an act of rebellion, he insisted that the long-term consequences of his teaching warranted the court’s intervention. With the prosecution’s case complete, the magistrate announced that Paul would begin his final defense the following day.
