In Episode 27, Paul began his final defense by challenging the prosecution’s interpretation of the evidence presented throughout the trial. He reminded the court that Roman officials, including Gallio, the tribune who rescued him in Jerusalem, and Festus, had repeatedly found no basis for condemning him to death. King Agrippa had reached a similar conclusion. Paul argued that the disturbances associated with his ministry had generally been instigated by those who opposed his message, rather than by his followers. The fact that others reacted violently to his teaching, he maintained, did not establish that he had encouraged or committed violence himself.

Paul then addressed Varro’s central accusation: that Christianity threatened Rome because its followers recognized an authority greater than Caesar’s. He acknowledged that allegiance to God placed limits upon earthly authority, but insisted that Christians were instructed to respect governing officials, pay their taxes, and fulfill their responsibilities within society. He pointed to the longstanding Jewish conviction that God stood above earthly rulers, a belief Rome had accommodated in various circumstances. Turning to the testimony of Gnaeus Valens, Paul argued that a soldier’s willingness to refuse an unjust command did not necessarily make him rebellious, particularly when that soldier remained committed to his duties and was prepared to accept the consequences of his refusal.

Paul concluded this portion of his defense by explaining the conviction upon which his ministry and the communities he had established ultimately rested. He declared that God had raised Jesus of Nazareth from the dead, a claim that, if true, transformed the meaning of suffering, authority, and death itself. Paul acknowledged that the court might reject his belief, but insisted that he could not abandon it merely because his life depended upon the verdict. His defense would continue the following day, when he intended to demonstrate what faith in the risen Christ had produced in the lives of those who embraced it.
