Julius, the Roman centurion responsible for transporting Paul from Caesarea to Rome, offers the court a perspective unlike that of Paul’s friends or religious opponents. He spent months observing Paul as a prisoner through a disastrous voyage, shipwreck and winter on Malta. Julius initially respected Paul enough to allow him some freedom at Sidon, but not enough to accept his warning that continuing the voyage from Crete would end disastrously. When the ship was caught by the violent wind the sailors called Euraquilo and hope of survival began to disappear, however, Paul became an unexpected source of steadiness.

Paul told the terrified passengers that an angel had assured him he must stand before Caesar and that everyone aboard would survive, though the ship would be lost. Julius gradually began trusting the prisoner who had already been proved right. Paul prevented sailors from secretly abandoning the vessel, encouraged the 276 people aboard to eat, and gave thanks for bread while the storm still raged. After the shipwreck, Julius prevented the soldiers from killing the prisoners. On Malta, Paul survived a viper bite, prayed for the sick and spent three months with ample opportunity to disappear. Yet when it was time to continue to Rome, he returned willingly to Roman custody.

Varro recognizes that Julius’s testimony reveals another form of Paul’s influence. Paul held no rank, commanded no soldiers and possessed no official authority, yet Julius came to trust his judgment. Julius insists that this confidence was earned through what he witnessed when Paul was frightened, hungry and cold. Paul himself rejects the suggestion that courage means an absence of fear: he was afraid, but he believed God had promised that he would stand before Caesar. The episode therefore presents courage not as fearlessness, but as the decision to continue faithfully when fear is present.
