Show Notes

Salome begins by confessing her part in one of the most uncomfortable moments in her sons' discipleship. After years of watching James and John sacrifice their livelihood and security to follow Jesus, she joins them in asking that they receive the places of honor at His right and left when His kingdom comes. Jesus responds not with a promise of status but with a question: can they drink His cup? James and John confidently answer that they can, without understanding what the cup will require. Jesus then teaches all twelve that greatness in His kingdom is measured not by position but by service.

Salome later learns about the Transfiguration, when Jesus took Peter, James, and John onto a mountain and revealed His glory before them alongside Moses and Elijah. Yet even this extraordinary revelation did not prepare them for what happened in Jerusalem. As Jesus entered the city to cries of “Hosanna,” Salome and her sons believed the long-awaited kingdom might finally be arriving. Instead, opposition intensified. In Gethsemane, James and John failed to remain awake when Jesus asked them to pray, then fled when He was arrested. The confrontation James had long expected finally came, but nothing about it resembled the victory he had imagined.

Salome remains when most of the disciples flee and witnesses the crucifixion alongside the other women. John eventually returns and stands near the cross, where Jesus entrusts Mary to his care, while James remains in hiding. Looking at the criminals crucified beside Jesus, Salome recognizes the terrible irony of her earlier request: places at Jesus' right and left exist, but they are crosses rather than thrones. At last she begins to understand Jesus' question about the cup. Her sons had asked to share His glory, but Jesus was preparing them for something deeper: to become like Him by learning the costly, self-giving love that defined His life.
