Show Notes

John's journey toward Jesus began at the Jordan River, where he became a disciple of John the Baptist. The Baptist understood that his task was not to gather followers permanently around himself but to prepare them for the Messiah. When he identified Jesus as “the Lamb of God,” John and Andrew followed Jesus, and eventually James and John left Zebedee's fishing business to become His disciples. Salome reflects on the quiet sacrifice of her husband, who watched his sons leave the life he had prepared for them without calling them back.

Salome eventually joined the women traveling with and supporting Jesus' ministry because she wanted to understand both the remarkable stories she was hearing and what was happening to her sons. She saw that much of discipleship was surprisingly ordinary, but extraordinary moments revealed that Jesus was unlike anyone they had known. James and John witnessed His authority over nature, His compassion toward the rejected, and His attention to people others overlooked. More importantly, they listened as Jesus challenged their assumptions about greatness, mercy, enemies, and service.

Yet their transformation remained incomplete. When Samaritans refused to welcome Jesus, James and John wanted to call down fire upon them, revealing how easily fierce devotion could become destructive when it had not yet learned mercy. Jesus continued patiently redirecting their intensity rather than extinguishing it. At the same time, Salome recognized another unresolved desire growing within them and within herself. They believed Jesus' kingdom was approaching, and after everything her sons had sacrificed to follow Him, she began wondering what place they might receive when that kingdom came.
