James reflects on Paul’s description of him as one of the pillars of the early church. While Peter, Paul, and others traveled widely, James remained in Jerusalem, where he taught, settled disputes, guided the growing community, and helped provide the structure it needed to endure. He came to understand leadership not as the exercise of authority, but as the acceptance of responsibility. Following the example of Jesus, who washed His disciples’ feet, James sought to serve rather than command.

The greatest challenge of James’ leadership came during the Council of Jerusalem, when the church debated whether Gentile believers needed to be circumcised and observe the Law of Moses. James recognized that the issue was ultimately about identity and belonging: whether Gentiles could enter the community through faith or first had to become Jews. After listening to Peter and Paul describe how God had given the Holy Spirit to uncircumcised Gentiles, James concluded that the church should not place unnecessary obstacles before those turning to God. His judgment helped open the door to a truly international church while preserving practices that allowed Jewish and Gentile believers to share fellowship.

James also explains the purpose of the letter that bears his name. He wrote to believers who had mistaken grace for permission to live without obedience, insisting that authentic faith must produce visible fruit. His teaching was not a contradiction of Paul’s emphasis on grace; the two men were confronting opposite errors. Paul opposed those who believed they could earn salvation through works, while James opposed those who claimed faith without allowing it to change their lives. Drawing on what he had witnessed in Jesus, James called the church to a faith expressed through humility, justice, compassion, and service.
