James reflects on the darkest days of his life, beginning with Jesus' crucifixion. Although he was in Jerusalem, he could not bring himself to stand at the cross beside his mother. When Jesus died, James believed that whatever possibility remained that his brother might be the Messiah had died with Him. The crucifixion seemed to settle every lingering question. A crucified Messiah made no sense within his understanding of God's promises, and for three days James assumed the story had come to its tragic end.

Everything changed with the reports that began circulating on the third day. One witness after another claimed to have seen the risen Jesus. The tomb was empty. Mary Magdalene, Peter, John, the disciples, and others all testified that Jesus was alive. The carefully constructed skepticism James had built over the previous three years began to crumble under the weight of events he could neither dismiss nor explain. Then, in a quiet moment alone, the risen Christ appeared to him personally.

James deliberately leaves most of that private encounter untold. What mattered most was not the words themselves but the recognition they produced. When Jesus simply spoke his name, decades of memories—the workshop in Nazareth, His perfect patience, His unwavering goodness, the unanswered questions of childhood, and the years of resistance—suddenly came into focus. In that instant James understood who Jesus had always been, and he believed completely. Looking back, James sees even his long season of skepticism as something God redeemed, preparing him to become a compassionate leader who understood the struggles of those who had not yet come to faith. His brother had shown him that true strength is not found in never breaking, but in being broken and remade by the grace of the risen Christ.
