Matthew reflects on the surprising providence that made him the author of the Gospel that bears his name. Looking back, he realizes that the skills developed during his years as a tax collector—organization, careful observation, logical arrangement, and attention to detail—were not discarded when he followed Jesus but redeemed for a greater purpose. A Gospel, he explains, is not a diary but a carefully constructed testimony that arranges events to reveal their meaning. The same disciplined mind that once organized financial accounts became the instrument for presenting the most systematic account of Jesus' life and teaching.

Writing especially for Jewish readers, Matthew intentionally structures his Gospel to demonstrate that Jesus is the fulfillment of Israel's Scriptures. He begins with Abraham and David, organizes Jesus' teaching into five major discourses that echo the books of Moses, repeatedly connects events to the words of the prophets, and preserves details that reveal God's plan extending beyond Israel to all nations. His Gospel is not merely a collection of memories but a carefully built case that Jesus is the long-awaited Messiah promised throughout the Old Testament.

As Matthew rereads the story he has written, one pattern emerges above all others: Jesus consistently moves toward those who have been told they do not belong. Tax collectors, Gentiles, women, lepers, the possessed, the blind, the poor, and the forgotten all find themselves welcomed by Christ. Matthew recognizes that this is not simply the theme of his Gospel but the story of his own life. Having once believed himself permanently excluded from God's mercy, he spends the rest of his life ensuring that others understand the invitation is for them as well.
