Show Notes

Matthew introduces Judas Iscariot by reminding us that he was not an obvious villain but one of the most capable men among the apostles. Unlike the others, Judas came from Judea rather than Galilee and carried the kind of background that would have inspired confidence. Intelligent, organized, persuasive, and trusted with the group's finances, he appeared to possess genuine faith and significant gifts. Matthew cautions against rewriting Judas' story with the benefit of hindsight. For most of the ministry, the other disciples saw a devoted companion, not a future betrayer.

As Matthew observed Judas over the years, however, he recognized something painfully familiar. Having spent his own life at a tax collector's table, Matthew understood the subtle temptation that money represents. The issue was never merely wealth but control—the desire to calculate, secure, and master one's circumstances. Matthew himself had gradually learned to surrender those instincts so that his disciplined mind served the kingdom rather than ruled it. Judas, however, seemed unable to make that same transition. The habits of stewardship slowly became habits of possession until the keeper of the money bag was himself held captive by it.

The episode concludes with the sobering mystery of Jesus' response to Judas. Knowing from the beginning what Judas would do, Jesus nevertheless washed his feet, shared the Passover meal with him, and honored him with the morsel of bread. Matthew concludes that the invitation of grace remained genuine until the very end. Jesus never withdrew it. Judas was never placed beyond Christ's mercy by the Savior; he placed himself beyond it by refusing the mercy continually offered to him. In Matthew's eyes, that is the deepest tragedy of Judas' story—and the warning it continues to offer every disciple.
