The earliest followers of Jesus were known as the people of “The Way.” Presumably, this was because of Jesus’ statement in John 14:6 that He is “the way and the truth and the life.” Luke says in Acts 18:26 that Aquila and Priscilla explained to Apollos “the way of God” more fully. In 2 Peter 2:2, the apostle Peter refers to Christianity as “the way of truth.” And the writer of Hebrews says in Hebrews 10:19-20 that Jesus’ broken body is the “new and living way” for us to enter the Most Holy Place.”
These early followers who eventually come to be called Christians consisted of a group of loosely connected local bodies of believers who gathered together on a regular basis, usually in each other’s homes to fellowship and worship together. They lived communally and often shared resources such as food and money (Acts 2:44-45 and Acts 4:32-36). Their services consisted mainly of preaching (during which time they might also read letters from missionaries such as Paul) and the singing of songs.
We have an opportunity to follow the way that leads to eternal life or the way that leads to destruction. Which way are we following?
