Episode 1489- Acts of the Apostles (Part 6, Chapter 9)

Now an old man exiled on Patmos, John takes over the story that his mother can no longer tell. He has outlived Salome, James, Peter, and most of the companions who shared the years with Jesus, and he finds himself the last surviving member of the Twelve. Yet he refuses to turn that fact into a complaint. Exile under Domitian has separated him from the churches and the active ministry that occupied his later life, but Patmos unexpectedly gives him something he had rarely possessed: silence. With the demands of leadership removed, John discovers that beneath everything else remains the presence he has been attending to since the day he first followed Jesus from the Jordan.

On the Lord's Day, that lifelong attentiveness becomes the means through which John receives the visions he is attempting to record. He acknowledges the inadequacy of ordinary language to describe what he has seen, yet insists that the frightening imagery of beasts, seals, catastrophe, and judgment does not represent a departure from the Jesus he has always known. To John, the visions complete rather than contradict the revelation that began decades earlier. The Word who was present “in the beginning” is still speaking at the end, and beneath even the terrible imagery John recognizes the same divine voice and the same love that he encountered in Jesus.

As John looks across the Aegean at night, his thoughts return to James, the brother whose death he has carried for decades. Grief has gradually become intertwined with gratitude as John remembers the transformation of the brother who once wanted to call down fire but ultimately gave his life extending peace to an enemy. Now John understands his own calling differently. James was called to pour himself out early; John has been called to remain, remember, and transmit what he has received. Alone among the Twelve and uncertain how much time remains, he no longer concerns himself with how long his life will last. His responsibility is simply to bear faithful witness to the truth he has carried from the beginning: the light continues to shine in the darkness, and after everything John has witnessed, his own life has become testimony that the darkness has not overcome it.
