Episode 1475: Acts of the Apostles (Part 5, Ch 5-Matthew)

Matthew begins by reflecting on the tragic significance of the thirty pieces of silver—the specific amount he alone records in his Gospel. More than a sum of money, it carried profound biblical symbolism: the price of a slave in the Law of Moses and the insulting wage of the rejected shepherd in Zechariah's prophecy. Matthew believes the chief priests deliberately exploited Judas's weakness, but he refuses to claim certainty about Judas's motives. Instead, he suggests that Judas may have convinced himself he was forcing Jesus into the decisive confrontation that would finally reveal His power. Whatever Judas intended, the result was the same: a kiss of friendship became the signal for betrayal.

The episode then turns to Judas's remorse after Jesus was condemned. Matthew carefully distinguishes regret from repentance. Judas regretted what he had done and returned the money, but he never remained long enough to receive the restoration Christ was prepared to offer. The accountant in Matthew sees a painful truth in Judas's attempt to return the silver: some transactions cannot be undone simply by returning the payment. The damage had already been done. Matthew contrasts Judas with Peter. Both failed grievously. The difference was not the magnitude of their sins but what happened afterward. Peter stayed near enough to be restored. Judas did not.

Matthew closes the season by balancing the final ledger. Following Jesus costs everything at the center of a person's life, but refusing Him carries an even greater cost: the loss of everything one might have become through His grace. Matthew and Judas both sat at tables of money. Both heard the same invitation. Both stood within reach of the same Savior. One left the table and discovered a life beyond anything he could have calculated. The other assigned a price to the priceless gift and lost what no amount of silver could ever purchase. Their stories stand together as a lasting testimony that every disciple must eventually decide what Jesus is truly worth.
