Show Notes

Matthew introduces himself as Levi bar Alphaeus, a tax collector who worked near Capernaum and profited from a system that enriched Rome and those willing to collaborate with it. He refuses to portray himself as an innocent victim of circumstance. He chose the work, wanted the money, and accepted the social consequences that came with it. Skilled with numbers and emotionally disciplined enough to collect from people who resented him, Matthew built a comfortable life at the cost of belonging to the community around him. What appeared to be prosperity gradually revealed itself as a comfortable cage.

Matthew had already heard about Jesus when the teacher from Galilee began passing his booth. What first caught his attention was the way Jesus looked at him—not with the hostility, contempt, or calculated indifference Matthew had grown accustomed to, but simply as a person. Then one morning Jesus stopped and said, “Follow me.” For perhaps the first time in his adult life, Matthew did not calculate the consequences. He left his table, accounts, income, and relationship with Rome because he suddenly understood that everything he had accumulated was worth less than whatever lay in the direction Jesus was going. The lifelong keeper of accounts closed his ledger and followed.

Matthew’s first response to being called was to open his home and invite the only community he still possessed—other tax collectors and people considered sinners—to meet Jesus. When the Pharisees objected to Jesus sharing a table with such people, Jesus answered that the sick, not the healthy, need a physician, and declared God’s desire for mercy rather than sacrifice. Looking around his crowded home, Matthew realized that his disreputable dinner had become a picture of the kingdom Jesus was announcing. The invitation was not reserved for people who had already made themselves worthy. It was reaching fishermen, outcasts, collaborators, and sinners—even a tax collector whose neighbors had every reason to despise him. Matthew would never forget what his own place at that table revealed about the reach of grace.
