Show Notes

James recalls the unsettling days after Jesus left Nazareth to be baptized by John and never returned to the ordinary life they had shared for three decades. As reports filtered back from across Galilee, James struggled to reconcile the brother he had known with the stories of miraculous signs, growing crowds, and astonishing authority. He witnessed Jesus' dramatic visit to the synagogue in Nazareth, where admiration quickly turned to outrage, culminating in an attempt to throw Him from a cliff. Although James heard Jesus teach with his own ears, he watched Him walk away without choosing to follow.

Looking back, James identifies three reasons for his unbelief. First, familiarity had dulled his sense of wonder; he thought he knew Jesus too well to believe such extraordinary claims. Second, the implications of those claims were overwhelming. Accepting Jesus as the Son of God would require surrendering control of his own life, something he was not yet willing to do. Finally, James admits that he was protecting the quiet, predictable life he had built in Joseph's workshop—a life where every measurement made sense and nothing demanded that he rethink everything he believed about himself or the world.

As Jesus' ministry intensified, James and the rest of the family attempted to intervene, concerned by the mounting opposition and rumors that Jesus had lost His mind. Unable to reach Him through the crowd, they received His now-famous response that those who do the will of God are His true family. Though James later came to understand that Jesus was expanding, not rejecting, the meaning of family, at the time he felt painfully outside the circle of belonging. Returning home once again without his brother, James remained unconvinced. Yet beneath his resistance, something had begun to change. The life that had once seemed sufficient no longer fit as comfortably as it once had, preparing his heart for the transformation still to come.
