In 1 Kings 18, Elijah challenges the prophets of Baal to a showdown on Mount Carmel. He gathers the people of Israel and confronts them, asking how long they will waver between God and Baal. The prophets of Baal prepare a sacrifice, but their god does not answer. Elijah then rebuilds the altar of the Lord and offers a sacrifice, calling upon God to send fire from heaven. God answers with a consuming fire, proving His power and authority. The people repent and acknowledge God as the true God. Elijah then commands the people to seize the prophets of Baal, and they are executed.
