The acclaimed French author, Victor Hugo once wrote that “a mother's arms are made of tenderness and children sleep soundly in them.” We explore other quotes from noted authors before listing some of the most important claims about motherhood from the Bible.

Besides labor pains and birth-giving, attributes most frequently associated with motherhood include comforting, nurturing, gathering, and guiding. All these are an expression of the image of God.

Mothers have long had an influence on the development of faithful children down through the ages of history. We identify three influential Christian mothers.

Scriptures referenced include Psalm 127:3; Psalm 139:13); Proverbs 22:6; Proverbs 23:25; Ephesians 6:1-3; Isaiah 42:14; Deuteronomy 32:18; isaiah 66:13; Psalm 131:2;

Luke 13:34; Deuteronomy 32:11-12; and Isaiah 49:15.
