Show Notes

Today’s episode introduces Isaac Watts, the “Father of English Hymnody,” and his 1707 masterpiece “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross.” Rather than simply recounting the crucifixion, Watts invites the worshiper to stand before Calvary and consider what Christ’s sacrifice demands of us. Earthly accomplishments, possessions, and pride diminish before such extraordinary love, leading to the hymn’s unforgettable response: “my soul, my life, my all.”

The modern retelling, “At the Cross,” makes that response intensely personal. The singer sees not only Christ’s suffering but the depth of His love and mercy, finding forgiveness and freedom from shame beneath the cross. The song gradually moves from contemplation to surrender: because Jesus gave everything to rescue us, the appropriate response is to give Him our hands, our days, our dreams, and ultimately our entire lives.

The closing reflection reminds us that Calvary simultaneously reveals the terrible cost of sin and the immeasurable love of God. Genuine contemplation of the cross cannot leave us unchanged or allow worship to remain merely verbal. Christ’s amazing love calls for a life of grateful surrender in which our choices, gifts, priorities, and days become an offering back to the God who gave everything for us.
