Show Notes

Andrew recalls Pentecost from his characteristic place near the edge of the action. While Peter delivers the sermon that leads thousands to repentance, Andrew watches the crowd, noticing individuals as the message begins to take hold. When three thousand people respond, Andrew does not occupy the platform; he spends hours in the water baptizing them. For him, this becomes another example of the hidden work that supports the visible moment—the quieter ministry without which the larger proclamation could not bear fruit.

As the church spreads beyond Jerusalem, Andrew travels north and northwest through unfamiliar regions, including traditions that place him around the Black Sea and eventually in Greece. The road teaches him that cultural difference is real, but not ultimate. Beneath unfamiliar languages, customs, and religions, he finds the same human longings he had recognized in Galilee: fear, hope, hunger, loneliness, and the search for something beyond the ordinary limits of life. Jesus’ command to make disciples of all nations becomes, for Andrew, more than a geographical mission. It is the discovery that no people are outside the reach of the gospel.

Andrew also reflects on the form his own ministry took. Unlike Peter, he was never primarily a preacher to crowds. His work happened in homes, small gatherings, and individual conversations. He watched for the person who was almost ready, answered questions, and helped people take the next step toward Christ. Over decades, Andrew comes to see that much of the gospel’s spread happened this way—not through a few famous moments, but through countless acts of attention and invitation. His lifelong ministry remained what it had been from the beginning: notice someone, bring them closer, and trust Christ with the rest.
