Episode 1467: Acts of the Apostles (Part 4, Chapter 2-Andrew)

Andrew reflects on his place among the twelve and the particular role he gradually came to understand as his own. He was not part of Jesus’ innermost circle with Peter, James, and John, and he does not resent that difference. Instead, Andrew recognizes that his calling was quieter and more personal: he noticed people at the edges and brought them to Jesus. The pattern began when he found Simon and announced that they had found the Messiah. Andrew comes to see that these seemingly small acts of finding and bringing are not secondary to the larger work of the kingdom; they are often the unseen hinge on which that larger work turns.

That pattern becomes especially clear during the feeding of the five thousand. While Philip calculates the impossibility of purchasing enough bread, Andrew moves through the crowd and notices a boy carrying five barley loaves and two small fish. Andrew knows the meal is hopelessly inadequate for the need before them, yet he brings the boy and his small offering to Jesus anyway. Jesus takes what appears to be insufficient and feeds thousands, leaving twelve baskets of leftovers. For Andrew, the miracle becomes a lasting lesson: his responsibility was not to produce abundance but to notice what was available and place it in the hands of Christ.

Andrew later encounters the same pattern during Jesus’ final week in Jerusalem when some Greeks approach Philip asking to see Jesus. Unsure how to respond, Philip turns to Andrew, who immediately understands what to do: people who want to see Jesus should be brought to Him. Their arrival prompts Jesus to speak about His approaching death and the grain of wheat that must fall into the ground to bear much fruit. Looking back, Andrew sees the continuity across his life: he brought his brother to the Messiah, a child’s small offering to the One who could multiply it, and Gentile seekers to the Savior whose death would open the way to the whole world. Again and again, Andrew’s calling was simply to notice, to bring, and to trust.
