Show Notes

Thomas recalls the journey back into Judea after Jesus learns of Lazarus’ illness and death. Because the authorities had recently attempted to stone Jesus, returning to Bethany—only two miles from Jerusalem—seemed extraordinarily dangerous. While the disciples calculated the risks, Thomas reached a characteristically direct conclusion: if Jesus was going, they should go too, even if it meant dying with Him. His famous declaration, “Let us also go, that we may die with him,” was not yet an expression of complete faith in Jesus’ identity, but it demonstrated the depth of Thomas’ commitment to the man he had spent three years examining and had concluded was worth following at any cost.

Arriving in Bethany, Thomas witnesses Jesus’ encounters with Martha and the grieving family. He hears Jesus make the extraordinary claim, “I am the resurrection and the life,” identifying resurrection not merely as a future event but as a reality embodied in Himself. Yet what most deeply affects Thomas is seeing Jesus weep. The same man who speaks with authority over life and death genuinely grieves beside the tomb of His friend. For Thomas, those tears provide further evidence of the consistency he has observed throughout Jesus’ ministry: His compassion is not performance but something real that reaches to the deepest parts of His character.

At Lazarus’ tomb, Thomas witnesses something that defies every natural explanation available to him. After the stone is removed, Jesus calls Lazarus by name, and a man who has been dead for four days walks out of the tomb. Thomas subjects the event to the same rigorous scrutiny he brings to everything else and concludes that the ordinary explanations cannot account for what he saw. He had entered Bethany believing that Jesus was worth dying for; he leaves confronted with the possibility that, in Jesus’ presence, death itself may not be final. Thomas is not yet ready to grasp the full implications of what he has witnessed, but the evidence is accumulating—and soon events will force him to decide what he truly believes.
