Show Notes

The Christmas season has evolved into the largest retail surge of the year, with billions of dollars in revenue generated worldwide. This is not only due to gifts, but also the thriving industries of travel, hospitality, and entertainment that benefit from the holiday. As Christmas has become a global celebration, it has transcended its Christian roots, with different cultures adapting the holiday to their own traditions and customs. From Japan's KFC dinners to India's blending of Christmas with local customs, the symbols of Christmas—such as Santa Claus and Christmas lights—have become universally recognized, even in places where Christianity isn't the dominant religion.

The power of Christmas also lies in the marketing and traditions that shape how we perceive the season. Retailers extend the Christmas shopping season by starting promotions earlier, tapping into the emotional response that Christmas evokes—nostalgia, warmth, and joy. The blending of holidays like Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas has become more pronounced, with stores and advertisements starting the Christmas rush before Thanksgiving. In all this, the core question remains: how do we keep Jesus at the center of Christmas amidst the consumerism and busyness? The Gospel of Luke reminds us that Christmas is ultimately about the birth of a Savior who brings joy to all people.

To stay grounded in the true meaning of Christmas, we are called to rediscover the awe of the Incarnation—God becoming human to dwell among us. Simplifying our celebrations can help us focus on what truly matters: celebrating Jesus. We are also called to practice purposeful generosity, give with a heart of worship, and make worship the centerpiece of the season. Christmas is an opportunity not only to celebrate but to share the message of Christ’s love, extending His light and joy to the world. Let us remember that the ultimate gift of Christmas is Jesus Christ, and as we give thanks for God's blessings, let that gratitude overflow into every part of our celebration.

And check out our Christmas musical special: "Highly Favored" that kicks off tomorrow.
