There was uneasiness in the hours after Jesus’ body had been laid in the grave. The disciples were in shock and disbelief, struggling to come to terms with the fact that their beloved teacher and leader had been executed. They were filled with sadness, grief, and a sense of loss, as they had placed their hope and trust in Jesus as the Messiah who would redeem Israel.
The disciples were also afraid and uncertain about their own safety, given that they had been associated with Jesus. Perhaps the authorities also saw them as potential threats. This fear led them to hide.
Besides this, they were confused and uncertain about what the future held for them and for their faith. Jesus' death on the cross raised questions about the validity of his message and the nature of God's plan for humanity.
There was sorrow and sadness – but though weeping endured through Friday night and continued through Saturday night, there was joy coming. On Sunday morning, Jesus, the Son of God emerged from the tomb wherein he had been laid, victorious over death and sin.
