Matthew tells us that right before His ascension, right before He issued the Great Commission, Jesus gathered with his disciples on a high mountain where “they worshiped him, but some doubted” (Matthew 28:17). Do you find it remarkable that some disciples doubted? At that point? After all that had happened? With irrefutable evidence that Jesus had power over death and the grave? One can argue that it is both remarkable and eminently reasonable. And comforting, because we find ourselves in good company when we – those who count ourselves as Christians – also struggle with doubts.
Lest we be too hard on those who doubt, we should take solace in these words written by Jesus’s brother, Jude, “Have mercy on those who doubt” (Jude 1:22).
