John 13:13 “You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am.” Other versions use the word Master instead of or in addition to Teacher. The title “Master” often was applied to Jesus during His earthly ministry. Six Greek words translated “Master” can be used as titles for Jesus. Two of these mean “Lord.” Those who taught concerning the things of God and the duties of man or those who might have otherwise been called “Rabbi” were often also called “Master” by their followers.
The word “disciple” refers to a learner or follower. The word “apostle” means “one who is sent out.” While Jesus was on earth, His twelve closest followers were called disciples. The twelve disciples lived with Christ, learned from Him, and were trained by Him. After His resurrection and ascension, Jesus sent these disciples out to be His witnesses (Matthew 28:18-20; Acts 1:8). They were then referred to as the twelve apostles. However, even when Jesus was still on earth, the terms “disciples” and “apostles” were used somewhat interchangeably.
