In the first century, widows were a real concern to the church. Soon after the birth of the church, shortly after the day of Pentecost, the book of Acts tells of widows who murmured because they were being neglected in the daily distribution of food. That was the first internal problem confronted by the early church. Christians, like their Jewish forebears, were called to minister to widows. But not to them only. We are blessed to bless those who are in need, whether a part of our congregations or not.
