Episode 473: Honor Begets Honor

The first four guidelines define how God wants us to show love for Him. This Fifth Guideline that tells us to honor our mother and father begins a series of six that show us how to love other people—starting from our earliest years in the family.   We should seek to honor our parents in much the same way that we strive to bring glory to God—in our thoughts, words, and actions. For a young child, obeying parents goes hand in hand with honoring them. That includes listening, heeding, and submitting to their authority. After children mature, the obedience that they learned as children will serve them well in honoring other authorities such as government, police, and employers.   Scriptures referenced include Jeremiah 35:18-19; Romans 12:10; Romans 13:1-2; Acts 4:19; and Colossians 4:6. ...

Episode 472: Remembering in Acts

The Fourth Commandment calls the people of God to remember the Sabbath. The Sabbath was set apart by God as a time of rest and spiritual rejuvenation. It is a special opportunity to draw closer to our Creator; time He designates for us to enhance our relationship with Him—to learn how to better love, worship and relate to Him.    Why does this guideline call us to remember? First, when given in Exodus, it was not a new commandment. The Sabbath was established at the end of Creation Week in the Garden of Eden. But also we need to remember, because of all the guidelines for abundant living, this may be the one that we might be most tempted to forget.    Did the apostles continue to remember to keep the Sabbath day holy after Jesus returned to heaven? In today’s top ten list, we note ten References to apostolic Sabbath-keeping in the Book of Acts.   Scriptures referenced include Acts 9:20; Acts 9:1-3; Acts 13:14-16, 26-27, 42-44; Acts 14:1; Acts 16:13-15; Acts 17:1-3; Acts 18:1-4, 8, 11, 19; Acts 19:8-9; Acts 24:14; and Acts 25:8. ...

Episode 471: The Way, the Truth, and the Life

Today we explore what the Gospel of John has to say about the guidelines for abundant living. In John 4:23-24, Jesus says that the hour “now is” that all true worshipers will worship in spirit and in truth. Jesus here is calling for a balanced form of worship: a worship that comes from the heart, that is sincere and deeply felt, that comes from the love and the fear of God. There is nothing wrong with emotions in worship. At the same time, God calls upon His true worshipers to worship Him “in truth.” God has revealed His will, His truth, His law—truth that we are expected to believe and obey. True worshipers will love God and from that love seek to serve Him, obey Him, and do what is right.    Later, in John 14:15, Jesus says, “If you love me, keep my commandments.” Yes, our worship should flow from love. But if we truly love, we will do what Jesus commands us to do.   Other scriptures referenced include Deuteronomy 5:6; John 4:21; 1 John 5:2; Mark 12:30; John 13:33, 36; John 14:1-4, 6; Matthew 22:32; Exodus 3:6; John 8:58; Matthew 28:20;John 18:4-6; Acts 4:12; Psalm 119:142; Matthew 5:17, 22, 28,32, 34, 39, 44; John 1:1; John 10:17-18; John 14:19; and John 8:31-32. ...

Episode 470: His Great Name

The third commandment, the third guideline for abundant living, is not about what we say as much as how we live. More literally the third commandment reads: “Do not carry the name of the name of the Lord in vain—do not represent the Lord Your God in an empty way.” Just as the high priest of Israel carried the names of the 12 tribes before God in the holy place of the synagogue, so are we, His followers, to bear His holy name in our lives.    Scriptures referenced include Exodus 20:7; Psalm 8:1; Psalm 111:9; Luke 11:2; Hebrews 4:16; Luke 1:46-49, 74-75; Luke 4:34; Psalm 18:49; Philippians 2:9-11; Luke 4:18-21, 24; and Isaiah 61:1-3. ...

Episode 469-The Traditions of Men

Today we explore how the second guideline for abundant living is reflected in the gospel of Mark. This guideline is a warning against idolatry. An idol is when something or someone becomes more important to us than God. By that definition even good things can become idols when we make them the ultimate things in our lives. Anything, or anyone, can become an idol if we place the value for that thing/person above our value for God.   Scriptures referenced include Exodus 20:4-6; Mark 7:5-6; and Mark 4:18-19. ...

Episode 468: The Great Commandment

Episode 468: The Great Commandment

What does the gospel of Matthew teach us about the first guideline for abundant living? This guideline is based on a commandment that regulates a certain relationship between God and his people. Biblical morality is predicated upon the reality that there is only one God, and he must be worshiped to the exclusion of all others.   The supreme guiding power over our lives, that which controls our ideals is our focus of worship. Many things can take the place of the worship of the true God in our hearts and minds. The adoration of these things will eliminate any possibility of our establishing or maintaining a real relationship with God. We need to seek God first at all times and for all things.   Scriptures referenced include Matthew 4:8-10; Deuteronomy 6; Matthew 22:36-38; Deuteronomy 5:6-7; Isaiah 44:18; Philippians 4:19; Job 1–2; 1 Kings 18–19; Matthew 6:33; and Matthew 6:24. ...
