The Book of Lamentations consists of five poems which deal with the destruction of Jerusalem in 586 B.C. They depict how city and country, palace and Temple, king and people, suffer under the terrible catastrophe. Jeremiah is an eyewitness to the fall of the city of God. He predicts this destruction (as do others), watches it take place, and now in this book he sadly reflects on it. He intends, through the poems, to express despair and teach God’s people that disobedience to the Lord results in immense suffering and distress. Jeremiah pours out his emotions in compassion, and empathy for God’s nation, as he watches them inhabit a foreign land.
